COACHES REPORT
Last Round:
There was some great tension in the last round, anything could still happen and did happen. In the girls section Daleen Wiid was under pressure from he start of the game but managed to get a big time advantage and won the game, thus claiming first place and the WIM title. Carmen De Jager also won her game to make sure she is in second place. Angelique drew and ended 7th overall. Well done girls.
In the open section it was chaos. The Egyptian boy lost that mean Calvin Klaasen only needed a draw or win to gain his IM title, but he pushed to hard and also lost the game. Very, very unlucky for Calvin, but that is chess and he ended overall 2nd in the tournament. Ryan van Rensburg lost to Melissa Greeff, but he still managed to keep his 3rd place. Lthukela Zitha won his game and ended 4th (tied 3rd), and Melissa Greeff ended 6th (tied 3rd aswell). Well done South Africans.
Overall it was a great tournament and a great experience. South Africa did very well and I also learned a lot especially from the manager side of things. Thanks for the opportunity. Here are the two champions D. Wiid and K. Wageih

Day 8
Round 8:
A great round for South Africa.
In the open section Lthukela Zitha had a long hard struggle but managed to draw. This puts Calvin Klaasen half a point behind the Egypt boy with one game to go. K Wageih from Egypt is playing the nr 1 seed Fide Master E Soares from Angola in the last round, so all is set for a great finish. Calvin Klaasen most probably played the best game of the tournament, with a neat sacrifice. The Brilliancy game as follows:
Chofya,M (ZAM) - Klaasen,CJ (RSA) [E88]
African Junior Championship 2007 (Boys) (8), 04.01.2008
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 Bg7 4.e4 d6 5.f3 0–0 6.Be3 e5 7.d5 c6 8.Bd3 cxd5 9.cxd5 Nh5 10.Qd2 f5 11.Bg5 Bf6 12.Bxf6 Qxf6 13.Nh3 Nd7 14.exf5 Nc5 15.Bc2 Bxf5 16.Nf2 Nf4 17.Bxf5

Here Calvin sacrificed a piece for a few pawns and lots of play. He kept the pressure throughout the game.
Nxg2+ 18.Kf1 Qxf5 19.Kxg2 Qxf3+ 20.Kg1 Rf5 21.Qe2 Rg5+ 22.Kf1 Qg2+ 23.Ke1 Rf8 24.Rf1 Rgf5 25.Ncd1 Rf3 26.Ne3 Qxh2 27.Nfd1 Qh4+ 28.Kd2 Qd4+ 29.Kc2 Qe4+ 30.Kd2 Qd4+ 31.Kc2 Qe4+ 32.Kd2 Rxf1 33.Nxf1 Qxd5+ 34.Kc2 Ne6 35.Kb1 Nd4 36.Qe1 Rxf1 0–1
Ryan van Rensburg had a tricky ending but finished it off nicely. This puts him in 3d place with the last game to go.

1.Rd3+ Kf4 2.Rd4+ Ke3 3.Rd3+ Ke4 4.Ra3 h3! 5.Ra4+ Kd5 6.Rh4 Rh1+ 7.Kxd2 h2 0–1, because of Ra1 Rxh2 and Ra2 + winning the rook.
Melissa Greeff also played a very nice opening and finished off J. Santos in 20 moves.
In the girls section Daleen Wiid beat Angelique Hatting and Carmen de Jager also won her game, with aggressive play. This leaves Daleen still half a point ahead of Carmen de Jager with one round to go. Thus the girls section is also set for a great finish.
Round 7:
This round was a good round for South Africa, with all the girls winning. This makes the girls section still very interesting with Daleen Wiid half a point ahead of Carmen De Jager, but Daleen has to play Angelique Hattingh in round 8, which will make an interesting match.
In the open section Calvin Klaasen drew with Melissa Greeff where Calvin was in a better position but couldn’t convert to a win in time trouble.

Ryan van Rensburg drew to J. Santos of Angola and Lthukela Zitha won his game to get to 4 points. He will be playing the Egyptian boy in round 8, South Africa’s last hope to be able to win the tournament. Let’s hope Zitha can pull it off.
Day 7:
There are two rounds today so going to be a tough day for the players.
Round 5:
Melissa Greeff again played a very nice game but missed the correct continuation in a tricky position being the exchange up.

Calvin Klaasen won with the Kings Indian playing on the opponent’s weaknesses. Calvin is still in second place half a point behind the Egyptian boy. Can anyone stop him? Ryan van Rensburg quickly won aswell as Lthukela Zitha.
In the girls section it didn’t go so well this round with Daleen Wiid and Angelique Hattingh losing. Carmen De Jager won neatly in a tricky position and she is just half a point behind Daleen with 3 rounds to go.
Day 6:
Today’s big match up: Calvin Klaasen vs Ryan van Rensburg.
Calvin and Ryan played a tricky out of book opening. It looked drawish at a stage with 3 light pieces each on the board, but ryan played an inaccurate move to give Calvin the advantage and score the point, the game as follows:
Klaasen,CJ (RSA) - van Rensburg,RP (RSA) [B23]

Move 25. Ryan played ... Bf5 here which was an inaccurate move; f5 would have been a better move to get an equal position.
Melissa Greef played a very nice Kings Indian defence and won the opposite colour bishop endgame.

Melissa is playing the leader Wageih, Kareim from Egypt tomorrow morning. Let’s hope she can get a point to keep the South Africans in the running.
Lthukela Zitha again was up a pawn, but could convert to a win and lost in time trouble.
In the girls section Daleen Wiid won in the Scandanavian to take a point and a half lead on the rest of the field. Carmen De Jager also played a very nice postitional game in the English opening to take the full point.

Angelique Hattingh got herself into a difficult position in the opening, but managed to draw.

Day 4
Well it’s the last day of 2007 so we can expect some fierce battles on the board. The tournament is running smoothly at the moment with Gunther van den Bergh being the main arbiter. Uganda only arrived this morning thus already missing 3 rounds, amazing. This morning there is one round at 9:00 am and then we only play 2 January at 16:00 again.
I hope you all have a great new years and that South African chess will have a great year in 2008. Happy New Years!!!
Round 4:
In the girls section Daleen Wiid beat Carmen de Jager to take the lead in the tournament by a point. Daleen did escape a loss by being a pawn down in a rook and pawn ending. Angelique maneuvered her pieces very nicely to take the full point.
In the open section Ryan van Rensburg was lucky to get a draw with a pawn down in the ending. Calvin played a nice pinpoint game to make sure he scores a full point. Melissa Greeff also played well to get a point. Lthukela Zitha missed a win and lost the game.
Thus the points after round 4:
Girls:
Daleen 4/4
Carmen 2,5/4
Angelique 2/4
Boys:
Calvin 3/4
Ryan 3/4
Lthukela 2/4
Melissa 2/4
Still 5 rounds left so lots to play for.
After the round we went for a game drive in the national park not to far from the playing venue.
1 January 2008
Happy new year to everyone.
Today is an off day. Some of the group stayed behind and rested, and the rest went to Lake Malawi. It was a long drive but worth it. On our way we saw the green countryside, with villages scattered all over. Eventually we got to the lake after 3hours + drive. It was a long drive but worth it at the end. It was a great experience to see Lake Malawi.

Day 6:
Today’s big match up: Calvin Klaasen vs Ryan van Rensburg.
Round 3:
The first South African battle about to start between Angelique Hattingh and Carmen De Jager on board 2.
Round 3 had some very close and interesting battles. Carmen won against Angelique in the English openings. Carmen had a nice little combination to win a pawn which Angelique missed and she couldn’t get any compensation for the pawn. Unfortunately Angelique is a bit off form by making a few miss calculations, but lets hope she can regain her from she showed at Nationals by winning the Under 16 girls section. The game is as follows:
de Jager,C (RSA) - Hattingh,A (RSA) [A29]

Daleen Wiid also won a tough match with the Caro-Kann defence. The game went down to the wire with only a few minutes left on each clock. Daleen Wiid is leading the girls section at the moment with 3/3.
In the boys section on board 1 Calvin Klaasen lost a very well played game in time trouble against the Egyptian boy. Due to lots of complications in time trouble Calvin blundered in the dieing seconds of the match.
Ryan quickly dispatched of his opponent in the Sicilian Sveshnikov Defence and is playing the Egyptian boy the following round. Lthukela Zitha was a pawn up in a difficult queen and pawn ending but couldn’t convert it to a win.

Lthukela Zitha unfortunately played a4 here and the opponent won the pawn back with Qd1+ Kh2 and Qd6+ to win the pawn on b4. Instead he should have played Qc4 to protect his pawns and then play a4 to create a passed pawn on the queen site.
Melissa Greef had a difficult position which ended up in opposite bishops. She made a small mistake in the end and her opponent had a nice combination to finish her off.
Day 4

28 December to 6 January 2008
Day1/2
We started our journey from South Africa at midday on the 28th.We met the previous Malawi President Mr. Tembo and the founder of the school on the plane. We arrived safely in Malawi, but then we had to wait for about 3 hours for our bus to arrive at the airport to take us to the playing venue 150km away. The bus trip was interesting with bright lights from the opposing cars, narrow roads with pot holes and wet circumstances. Its Africa after all with new experiences every moment.
The opening ceremony was eventful, with lots of speeches as usual. Everyone got their sleeping place and had a good rest for the first round to follow tomorrow.
In the morning we had a technical meeting to sort out all the rules and problems and play started at 16:00.
Round 1:
The best game of the round according to me was Ryan van Rensburg interesting, difficult knight endgame against R Mokoto from Zimbabwe (one of the tournament favorites). Ryan was a pawn up and dealt very neatly with this endgame to get his first point of the tournament. The game goes as follows:
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.f3 d5 4.cxd5 Nxd5 5.e4 Nb6 6.Nc3 Bg7 7.Be3 0-0 8.Qd2 Nc6 9.0-0-0 Na5 10.Bh6 Nac4 11.Qg5 Qd6 12.Bxg7 Kxg7 13.Bxc4 Nxc4 14.Qb5 Qf4+ 15.Kb1 Nd6 16.Qd3 Qg5 17.Nge2 c6 18.h4 Qa5 19.h5 Be6 20.hxg6 hxg6 21.d5 cxd5 22.Nf4 Qc5 23.Nxe6+ fxe6 24.exd5 Rad8 25.Rhe1 exd5 26.Rxe7+ Rf7 27.Rxf7+ Nxf7 28.Nxd5 Rd6 29.Qc3+ Qxc3 30.Nxc3 Rxd1+ 31.Nxd1 Kf6

Well played Ryan, good endgame technique.
Unfortunately Angelique Hattingh failed to score a point and lost on time in a though struggle against E Tembo from Zambia. The rest of the South African players won and on to day 3.
Day 3
A drizzling day, wet, wet, wet. The food is good so far and the playing venue very nice.
