SELECTION OF PLAYERS

NB !      PARTICIPATION IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN JUNIOR CLOSED CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS IS COMPULSORY FOR ANY PLAYER WHO WISHES TO BE CONSIDERED FOR SELECTION FOR INTERNATIONAL PARTICIPATION.

ALL PLAYERS AND TEAMS TO REPRESENT SOUTH AFRICA AT INTERNATIONAL EVENTS WILL BE ANNOUNCED AT THE PRIZE GIVING OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN JUNIOR CLOSED CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS.

In the event of a withdrawal of a player the replacement player will be selected according to the results of the Chess South Africa Junior Championships 2006 in conjunction with the results of the South African Junior Closed Chess Championships 2007.

THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA WILL APPLY:

WORLD YOUTH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS

2.1.1.    NATIONAL CHAMPIONS:
2.1.1.1  The National Champion of the particular age group as determined by the CSAJC held in December of a particular year, for participation the following year.

2.1.1.2  If both boys and girls are playing in the same event, the highest finished individual of the opposite sex will be regarded the National Champion for that age group; unless, where the Swiss system is used, a sub-minimum 60% result which is required for national champions to be awarded national colours is not achieved. This equates to 5,5/9 or 5/8 during the CSAJC.

2.1.1.3  Where approximately 20 or more female players are entered into a particular age group, the females will play in a separate section where the Swiss system will be used. This will be decided by the selection committee in conjunction with the chief arbiter.

2.1.1.4  Playoffs according to the CSAJC tournament rules must be held to determine champions where ties occur.

2.1.1.5  The National Champions will be awarded full National Colours and may also receive a small sponsorship from SAJCA for international participation. (The entry fees will be covered by CHESSA).

2.1.2     SECOND PLACE PLAYERS:
2.1.2.1  These players are awarded S.A. Colours but are liable for all costs incurred.

If there is an outright 2nd place at the CSAJC then that  player will be the first invitee for 2nd place and will be announced at the prize giving of the CSAJC.

2.1.2.3  If there is a tie between 2 players for 2nd or 3rd place at the CSAJC then they will be the first and second invitees.

If there is a tie between more than 2 players (say x players) for 2nd place at the CSAJC, the final selection will be made based on the results (of those x players) of the Junior Closed.

Note:    The only exception to this rule (2.1.2.2, 2.1.2.3 and 2.1.2.4) will be if another player is representing SAJCA at a tournament running concurrently with the CSAJC, then those 2 or more players tied for second place, as well as the players selected by SAJCA to play in an international tournament, will be invited to the Junior Closed where the final selection will take place.

In the event of a tie at the Junior Closed playoffs will take place.

2.1.3     THIRD PLACE PLAYERS:

These players are awarded S.A. Colours but are liable for all costs incurred.

If there is an outright 3rd place at the CSAJC then that  player will be the second invitee (3rd place) and will be announced at the prize giving of the CSAJC.

2.1.3.3 If there is a tie between more than 2 players for 3rd place at the CSAJC, then these players will be invited to the Junior Closed. The final selection will be made based on the results of the Junior Closed.

Note:    The only exception to this rule (2.1.3.2 and 2.1.3.3) will be if another player is representing SAJCA at a tournament running concurrently with the CSAJC, then those 2 or more players tied for third place, as well as the players selected by SAJCA to play in an international tournament, will be invited to the SA Junior Closed CC where the final selection will take place.

2.1.3.4 In the event of a tie at the Junior Closed playoffs will take place.

2.2       WORLD JUNIOR AND GIRLS U/20 CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS.
The National Champion of the boys U/20 age group as determined by the CSAJC held in December of a particular year, for participation the following year.
The National Champion of the girls U/20 age group as determined by the CSAJC held in December of a particular year, for participation the following year.

If more than one player may be sent SAJCA may increase the size of the delegation based on the principle that only senior players (U/18 & U/20) of the required strength will be considered, as was the principle in the past based on the results of the SA Junior Closed CC and CSAJCC.

2.3       WORLD YOUTH UNDER 16 CHESS OLYMPIAD.
The results of the SA Junior Closed will determine the South African representatives irrespective                          of gender, in the under 16 age group. Four players can be selected, although a fifth player may                                be included in the team.

2.4       AFRICAN JUNIOR CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP.
The results of the SA Junior Closed will determine the South African Representatives (one male and one female) irrespective of age.  If more than one participant may be sent SAJCA may increase the size of the delegation based solely on the results of the SA Junior Closed Chess Championships.

2.5       OTHER INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENTS.
Other players/teams to represent South Africa at tournaments other than those listed above may be selected by the Selection Committee of the Association.

PLAYERS THAT DID NOT PARTICIPATE IN THE CSAJC.

Any recognised top player that did not participate in the CSAJC due to unforeseen circumstances    such as illness or participation on behalf of SAJCA in another tournament such as the Africa Junior CC           etc. Such player should supply SAJCA with a written apology and proof why he/she did not participate in   the CSAJC.

PLAYERS THAT PARTICIPATED IN THE CSAJC AND MISSED THE INITIAL LIST OF INVITEES.

The following points should be taken into consideration:

    • A player’s final position in the CSAJC.
    • Players such as last years champions or second placed players.
    • Rating should also be a criteria and should be considered together with the other criteria,
    • A player’s performance at other top tournaments such as SA Open, SA Ladies Open/Closed

Previously disadvantaged players that showed in the CSAJC that they are strong players should be strongly considered. Only players that finished in the top 15 (guideline) will be      considered.

Regions may put forward an application for a wild card entry with the necessary motivation taking into consideration the abovementioned guidelines.
