SELECTION POLICY FOR THE SELECTION OF JUNIOR TEAMS FOR INTERNATIONAL PARTICIPATION (2007/2008)
This policy document is valid for the selection of players and officials as pertaining to the circumstances laid out below.
- PLAYERS SELECTED TO REPRESENT SOUTH AFRICA AT THE FOLLOWING TOURNAMENTS:
Tournaments that players will receive full S.A. Junior Colours:
- World Youth Chess Championships Boys and Girls Under 10,12,14,16,18 Individual competition
World Junior and Girls U/20 Chess Championship Under 20 Girls
Individual competition
World Youth Under 16 Olympiad Under 16 Boys and Girls Mixed
Team Competition
African Junior Chess Championship Under 20 Boys and Girls.
Individual Competition
Dubai Juniors Under 14
Individual competition
St Augustine Under 20
Individual competition
- PLAYERS SELECTED TO PARTICIPATE IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN JUNIOR CLOSED CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS. (SAJCCC) All players to be U20..
- OFFICIALS
Coaches and/or managers for tournaments at which South Africa have official participants as laid out above.

Chess South Africa Junior Championships (CSAJC)
South African Junior Closed Chess Championships (SAJCCC)
- SELECTION AND VERIFICATION OF SELECTIONS.
The Director of Youth Chess in cooperation with the management committee of CHESSA shall appoint a Junior Selection Committee, which shall have the task of selecting the players for the events as required. Such selected teams/individuals will be put forward to CHESSA for ratification and approval. Ratification by CHESSA implies that CHESSA must observe if the approved selection criteria were followed by the Junior Selection Committee. Any queries must be referred back to the Junior Selection Committee.
2 SELECTION OF PLAYERS.
NB! PARTICIPATION IN THE SOUTH AFRICAN JUNIOR CLOSED CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS IS COMPULSORY FOR ANY PLAYER WHO WISHES TO BE CONSIDERED FOR SELECTION FOR INTERNATIONAL PARTICIPATION.
ALL PLAYERS AND TEAMS TO REPRESENT SOUTH AFRICA AT INTERNATIONAL EVENTS WILL BE ANNOUNCED AT OR AFTER THE PRIZE GIVING OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN JUNIOR CLOSED CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS.
In the event of a withdrawal of a player the replacement player will be selected according to the results of the Chess South Africa Junior Championships 2007 in conjunction with the results of the South African Junior Closed Chess Championships 2008.
THE FOLLOWING CRITERIA WILL APPLY:
2.1 WORLD YOUTH CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS.
2.1.1. NATIONAL CHAMPIONS:
2.1.1.1 The National Champion of the particular age group as determined by the CSAJC held in December of a particular year, for participation the following year.
2.1.1.2 The tie-break system according to the CSAJC tournament rules must be held to determine champions where ties occur.
2.1.1.3 The National Champions will be awarded full Junior National Colours and may also receive a small sponsorship from CHESSA for international participation. (The entry fees of the champions will be covered by CHESSA).
2.1.2 SECOND PLACE PLAYERS:
2.1.2.1 These players are awarded S.A. Junior Colours but are liable for all costs incurred.
2.1.2.2 For 2nd place at the CSAJC, the final selection will be made based on the results of the SAJCCC
2008 and the results of the CSAJCC 2007 for all sections (Sum of the cumulative scores from SAJCCC 2008 and CSAJCC 2007), except the U10 section where only the results of the SAJCCC will be used. In the event of a tie the tie-break system according to the SAJCCC tournament rules must be used.
2.1.3 THIRD PLACE PLAYERS:
- These players are awarded S.A. Junior Colours but are liable for all costs incurred.
2.1.3.2 For 3rd place at the CSAJC, the final selection will be made based on the results of the SAJCCC 2008 and the results of the CSAJCC 2007. for all sections (Sum of the cumulative scores from SAJCCC 2008 and CSAJCC 2007) except the U10 section where only the results of the SAJCCC will be used. In the event of a tie the tie-break system according to the SAJCCC tournament rules must be used.
Note: The only exception to this rule (2.1.3.2) will be if another player/s is representing South Africa at a tournament running concurrently with the CSAJC, then the players representing South Africa in an international tournament or other CHESSA approved tournament, may be invited as a wild card to the SAJCCC where the final selection will take place. Such players must apply via their regions/unions as per #3.2 the results of the SAJCCC will be used to determine the 3rd player selection.
- In the event of a tie the tie-break system according to the SAJCCC tournament rules must be used.
2.2 WORLD JUNIOR AND GIRLS U/20 CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS
The National Champion of the boys U/20 age group as determined by the CSAJC held in December of a particular year, for participation the following year.
The National Champion of the girls U/20 age group as determined by the CSAJC held in December of a particular year, for participation the following year.
If more than one player may be sent CHESSA may increase the size of the delegation based on the principle that only senior players (U/18 & U/20) of the required strength will be considered, as was the principle in the past based on the results of the SAJCCC and the results of the CSAJCC.
2.3 WORLD YOUTH UNDER 16 CHESS OLYMPIAD.
The results of the SA Junior Closed (U16 Section) will determine the South African representatives irrespective of gender, in the under 16 age group. Per Team: Five players will be selected. For 2008 we will be taking two teams total of 10 players will be selected. A team will receive full S.A. Junior Colours. The B team will receive CHESSA junior colours and will be selected by the selection committee but are liable for all costs incurred.
2.4 AFRICAN JUNIOR CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP.
The results of the SAJCCC (U18/20 Section) will determine the South African Representatives (one male and one female) irrespective of age. If more than one participant may be sent CHESSA may increase the size of the delegation based solely on the results of the SAJCCC.
- St LO FRANCE U20
The players are liable for all costs incurred.
Only the results of the SA Junior Closed will determine the South African representatives irrespective of gender.
Selection will be done across all the age groups to players that have not qualified for selection in an International tournament for 2008.
A maximum of 3 players boys and girls across all age groups will be eligible for selection, U10, U12, U14, U16, U20
- DUBAI JUNIORS U14
The players are liable for all costs incurred.
Only the results of the SA Junior Closed (U16 – for U14 players, U12, U10) will determine the South African representatives irrespective of gender.
Selection will be done across U16, U12 and U10 age groups to players that have not qualified for selection in an International tournament for 2008.
A Maximum of 6 players will be eligible for selection, 1 boy and 1 girl per age group, U10, U12, U14.
- ST AUGUSTINE U20
The players are liable for all costs incurred.
The results of the SA Junior Closed U20 section will determine the South African
Representatives for the Boys. The Girls selection will be recommended by SAWCA.
Players will be eligible for selection if they have not qualified for an International tournament for 2008.
A maximum of 4 Girls and 4 Boys will be selected.
- OTHER INTERNATIONAL TOURNAMENTS.
- Any other tournaments that may arise and deemed by CHESSA to be of sufficient stature..
- OFFICIALS
Managers/Coaches may be selected to accompany teams/players on the recommendation from the Junior Selection Committee and.CHESSA.
3. S.A. JUNIOR CLOSED CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS
THIS IS THE PRESTIGE S A JUNIOR CHESS CHAMPIONSHIPS WHERE ONLY THE VERY BEST PLAYERS IN EACH GROUP ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE.
As a guideline the following players will be invited in the following age groups according to the results of the CSAJC 2007.
U/20 Section (U18, U20)
Boys Girls
- Under 20 8 players 5 players
- Under 18 8 players 5 players
- Plus a maximum of 6 wild cards (Guideline)
U/16 Section (U14, U16)
Boys Girls
- Under 16 8 players 5 players
- Under 14 8 players 5 players
- Plus a maximum of 6 wild cards (Guideline)
U/12 Section (U12)
Boys Girls
- Under 12 8 players 5 players
- Plus a maximum of 6 wild cards (Guideline)
U10 Section (U10) Boys Girls
- Under 10 6 players 6 players
- Plus a maximum of 2 wild cards each for boys and girls.
All sections will play a swiss with boys and girls combined except in the U10 section where a round robin will be played between the boys and girls respectively.
3.1 Criteria for wild card entries for the SA Junior Closed Chess Championships
PLAYERS THAT DID NOT PARTICIPATE IN THE CSAJC.
Any recognised top player that did not participate in the CSAJC due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness or participation in another CHESSA approved tournament such as the Africa Junior CC, SASSU CC, etc. See NB note below.
PLAYERS THAT PARTICIPATED IN THE CSAJC AND MISSED THE INITIAL LIST OF INVITEES.
The following points should be taken into consideration:
- A player’s final position in the CSAJC.
- Players such as last year’s champions or second placed players.
- Rating should also be criteria and should be considered together with the other criteria.
- A player’s performance at other top tournaments such as SA Open, SA Ladies Open/Closed.
Previously disadvantaged players that showed in the CSAJC that they are strong players should be strongly considered. Only players that finished in the top 15 (guideline) will be considered.
3.2 Wild card applications
NB! Regions/Unions and other bodies must put forward an application for a wild card entry with the necessary motivation taking into consideration the abovementioned guidelines to reach the Director of Youth Chess by the
